Gamercamp is excited to secure the exclusive Toronto premiere of the film adaptation of cult hit adventure game Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney by famed Japanese director Takashi Miike (Ichi The Killer, Audition, 13 Assassins).
Set in the near future, the volume of court cases forces a change in the system: all cases must be decided within three days. The courtroom becomes a heightened reality show, complete with celebrity attorneys and a ringside audience.
Miike has adapted stories from popular culture before, such as his film Ichi the Killer, based on a manga of the same name. In adapting Ace Attorney, he doesn’t just pay lip-service to the characters, instead envisioning the world of the games brought to life in film. The film smartly revolves around relatable conflict: young attorney Wright starts the film grappling with the death of his mentor, while juggling the pressure from rival prosecutor, Miles Edgeworth.
Miike’s adaptation blending the visual style of the game with the director’s own manic sensibilities. The film has been declared by Kotaku as “the best videogame movie ever!” while IGN called it “a pitch-perfect adaptation.” Ace Attorney has shown to sold-out crowds at festivals in New York and Montreal and is sure to be similarly successful in Toronto.
Note: the film is a separately-ticketed event from Gamercamp, although attendees receive a discount for the Sunday screening. Tickets are available online and at the door. But beat the line-up by buying online and printing your tickets ahead of time!
